Brief description

Located in southwestern Taiwan, Kaohsiung is Taiwan's second largest city. Kaohsiung used to enjoy a thriving economy for its steel and petrochemical industries, but now it is gearing towards cultural tourism, touting its history, nature and hospitality. An oceanic tourist capital it is!

Kaohsiung has a highly developed transport network, especially sea and air. In fact, Kaohsiung's ports are always filled with commercial and tourist ships from all over the world, and its international airport offers direct flights to and fro major Asian cities. Kaohsiung's railway and highway networks are also quite developed and convenient. The city's public transport is really advanced, including the rapid transit that's becoming more complete by day, as well as Taiwan's first light rail transit. All these make it much easier to enjoy Kaohsiung, especially cultural spots such as the world-famous Formosa Boulevard Station, diversified art installations, and boisterous street stands.

Geography

Kaohsiung is located Taiwan’s Southwestern region and is a long narrow stretch of land. Its total area consists of 2,952 square kilometers. Chianan and Pingtung plains are located on the north and east sides. The Taiwan Straits are located to the west and the Bashi Channel to the south.

Geographically it is in an ideal location. The large harbor makes it an important trade and commerce stop along the Northeast Asia / South Pacific passageway. This has quickly propelled the development of this international city.

Kaohsiung has an international airport with direct flights to a variety of Asian cities.

It is Taiwan’s largest international port, and the world’s 6th largest container port. The port is quite spacious. There’s also a long sandbank, which makes it a scenic natural harbor. The Kaohsiung Port also plays an important role in the tourism industry.

Climate

Kaohsiung City is located in the southwestern part of the island of Taiwan. The city, which lies almost entirely south of the Tropic of Cancer, has a tropical monsoon climate, dry in the winter, hot and wet in the summer and autumn. Because Kaohsiung is next to the Taiwan Strait, climatic changes are not dramatic, thanks to the moderating effect of the ocean. Temperatures are generally lowest in January and February, with averages ranging from 19.9 to 21.5°C, and hottest from June to August, with averages of 28.3 to 29.5°C. Kaohsiung City gets more sunshine than any other place in Taiwan.
